Ok so I dye my hair constantly, I mean I wait the prefered amount of time to dye it but now it wont cover. Whenever I dye my hair the roots take to it but not the rest of my hair. My hair is now black brown and red because of the dye screwing up. Ive even tried using two boxes but it just wont work. How can I dye my hair but have it cover the whole thing not just my roots. Because it looks ridculous with red roots and the rest black. Anyone know of anything I can do? I also cant afford to go to a salon to get it done, but it really needs dyed badly. Can anyone help or tell me where I can get some help??

First of all, I hope you will take my advice as I am a hairstylist. Here's a clue as to what has happened. Color does not lift color and that is why your ends keep darkening rather than going the color it should. Your roots of course will take to color because it is not previously colored. My advice is that if you do not like the color it is now, seek professional help from a stylist. I will tell you though that if your hair is severely damaged it is not wise to get it fixed. Most stylist's will do a soap cap which consists of clarifying shampoo, bleach, and peroxide to lift the unwanted color. Also if your hair is in good shape and is able to be fixed, be prepared to spend money that you really don't want to spend because we go by the amount of time it takes to correct your color. Secondly, once your hair is fixed and I am not by no means trying to criticize you, but go to a professional when it comes to color. Box color has metallic dyes and hennas that are not good for your hair and will make it dry and brittle. I hope you will take my advice. I know that you may not be able to afford going to a salon to fix your problem, but trust me as I have seen many mistakes on people(non hairstylists) giving advice to others to correct your problem. It won't happen. I am sorry about your hair. Please seek help or maybe someone can borrow you the money to get it fixed. Another option which I try to stay away from is to cut the hair if your not happy and is less expensive. One more thing, all the others might tell you to keep trying with another color or brand and because your hair is very porous it will just keep darkening rather than lightening except with the use of bleach. Plus, some of the box colors might not tell you what color they truly have in there and you might end up with green, grey, or an awful color.

I'm a constant dyer as well. If the dyed part of your hair is black, you can't lighten it up to take another color without bleaching. Another issue is regarding the number of times your hair has been dyed (especially important for longer hair that sees more dying). Each time you dye your hair, you've damaged the strands of hair, and this will, over time, make the hair take the dye unevenly.
But my guess is if you've got to lighten the black first, and you WANT to do this at a salon so you don't end up with burnt-to-a-crisp hair that's strawlike and orange. (personal experience)

You need to try to stick w/ one color and have several highlights put in w/ this color and eventually phase out to the whole color honey and just do the roots when they start showing about 1/4 inch probably about every 4 to 5 weeks. This will give you healthier hair and a more even color. I'd try for a color in between the three you have like medium ash brown and stick w/ it until some of it grows out and then start slowly cutting a 1/2 inch off each month until then so you will get the ****ed up colors out of it. If you highlight heavily w/ the med. ash brown two or three times in a couple of months you will soon get to do all of the roots w/ it and then repeat until you get the one color. Good luck!!
